- MARSHALL, Capt. Samuel H., Capt. Samuel H. Marshall, of the American ship Powhattan, a few days since arrived from Liverpool, was accidentally drowned in the bay on Tuesday night last, and that too under the most afflicting circumstances. Upon his arrival in port he visited the city, leaving his wife and one child on board his vessel at the lower shipping anchorage. On Tuesday night he started on the schooner Nimrod (a lighter) to go down to his vessel, with the intention of bringing his wife and child up to the city. About 10 o'clock, when the Nimrod was supposed to be in the vicinity of the lower shipping, Capt. M., it is presumed with the purpose of looking out for his ship, stepped out in the gangway and being unconscious that the outer railing in that part of the vessel had been removed, he fell overboard. The schooner was immediately rounded to, a boat lowered, and every exertion made to find and save him, but he was never seen afterward. Capt. M., was a native of Portsmouth, N. H. where he has now living a widowed mother, to whom these melancholy tidings will bring sorrowing and grief. He was well known to the commercial men of this city, as a man of integrity and exalted worth in his calling, faithful to the trust of all who confided in him, and ever true to the interest of his patrons. His bereaved family, although strangers here themselves, have the condolence of a large circle of the acquaintance of an honored husband and respected father.
