Borghuis, Barney Obituary
Last Saturday while the steamer Swan was returning from Pine Knoll, whither she had gone with Coroner Graves to bring back the body of Frank Huber, who, as noted in these columns last week, had been found dead in his house there, she picked up three men who were clinging to a capsized boat. Taken aboard, they proved to be German farmers of Pine Knoll, Messrs. Fred Smith, Joseph Jasken and Anton Teikan. When they recovered sufficiently to talk, they related that they, accompanied by Barney Borghuis and Herman Jasken, had left Aitkin with a boatload of supplies and had gotten about two miles on their journey home when the boat ran afoul of sweeper and capsized. The three rescued managed to get hold of boat to which they had been clinging for some time when picked up by the Swan. Herman Jasken and Barney Borghuis were drowned. The Swan cruised about a short time, but no trace of the unfortunate men could be found. Barney Lange recovered the bodies Tuesday, the interment taking place Wednesday, mass being celebrated over the remains by Rev. Fr. Green before burial. The deceased leave wives and children to mourn their untimely deaths. [The Aitkin Age, (Aitkin, MN), July 24, 1897, P.4.
