McCARTY / ROWLEY, children, Obituary

DROWNED: On Sunday last a little daughter of DANIEL MCCARTY aged 9 years, and one of JOEL ROWLEY, aged _? years, were drowned in the Tuscarora Creek in this village. It seems they both went out to play together, between three and four o'clock Sunday afternoon, and not returning, Mrs. ROWLEY, after a couple of hours abscense, became alarmed and urged the neccessity of a search, but her husband being absent, nothing was done till evening, when on searching, they were both found but a few rods from their homes, where they had evidently attempted to cross a sort of a cove of the creek, on some loose Saw Logs; the water was of the depth of about seven feet; the little girl of Mr. ROWLEY'S was discovered floating on the surface among the log; the other had sank but a few feet from her - it is supposed they had been in the water from one to three hours. It was a sad sight to see them taken from their watery graves, and laid out but a few rods from each other. From frequent occurrences of this kind, in this place, Parents should be admonished of the danger of allowing children to play near the water. They have had many warnings ere this, yet nothing is more common than to see small children allowed to make the Creek and River, their daily resort in the summer season. MULLEN, Ella (child), Obituary

Died, this village, Jan 26th, 1854, ELLA, daughter of Mr. Seth Mullen, aged 3 years.

ELLA! 'twas hard from thee to part, And leave thee in that dreary tomb, We used to clasp thee to the heart, And never even dream of gloom; Our home was sweet as home can be -'Tis gloom now, but well with thee. How strangely thou art intertwined With everything we see below! And every thought that thills the mind, Is tinged with thee where'er we go, And all we do, or hear, or see, Appears as if it spoke of thee. The little relics thou hast left, No hand shall sctter or destroy, They'll be to us, of the bereft, Mementos of our days of joy, When we each moment used to find New tokens of the opening mind. I was almost morn - with anguish wrung, We bent above thy sinking clay, When, lo! the birds of morning sung, And up thy spirit winged its way! Were those sweet birds the angels given To fly and sing thee into Heaven? They lull us, ELLA, it was best So sweet a union should be riven, For thou did'st mak us both so best, We did not think enough of Heaven. O! now our guardian angel be, Till we are safe in Heaven with the. -Gom. [The Voice of the Nation (Addison, NY) Wednesday, July 4, 1855]
