  • BURNHAM, Miss Abigail D., Obituary, At Pembroke, 18th inst., very suddenly, Miss Abigail D. Burnham, age 20. By this death the family are very deeply afflicted. As a daughter, Miss B. was affectionate and obedient; as a sister, lovely, and much beloved; and as a friend, kind, amiable, and obliging. She possessed superior powers of mind, and exhibited a cheerful and amiable disposition, which won the confidence and esteem of all with whom she associated. During the last Spring she was engaged as Preceptress of the Academy in Danville, Vt., of which Mr. Charles Burnham is Principal. She left Danville at the close of the Spring term, to spend the Summer with her friends in Pembroke, with the intention of returning again in the Fall. But after the death of her mother, which occurred on the 10th of July, she relinquished her purpose, that she might alleviate the sorrows of her sisters the cares of duties of the family. She had been slightly indisposed for a few days, but was not seriously ill until the day before her death; and even then there were no alarming apprehensions entertained, either by herself, physician, or others, until a few moments before she ceased to breathe. Thus suddenly was this amiable and lovely youth arrested by the hand of death, and in an unexpected hour, torn from the bosom of relatives by whom she was most ardently loved, amnd a circles of acquaintances and friends, by whom she was universally and deservedly respected and esteemed. The lungs were so limited in their expansion, that the process of respiration was extremely difficult. Her sufferings were intense, and language is incapable of describing her distress.

Her funeral was attended the Sabbath subsequent of her decease, in the afternoon. [New Hampshire Statesman, (Concord, N.H.), July 30, 1847]
