O'DONNELL, Rev. Thomas, Obituary
Rev. Thos. O'Donnell, formerly pastor of the Catholic Church at this place, died at the vicarage, on Thursday morning, after an illness of some ten hours, of cholera. He had been on a visit to this place, where he has a number of relatives, and had, we understand, enjoyed his usual good health, up to within a day or two of his death.
Father O'Donnell was a native of Ireland, but came to this country when young and prepared himself for the holy office, in St. Louis. He was ordained for the priesthood, in Chicago, in 1841, and we believe first regularly entered upon his holy calling at this place in 1842. He was a man of great energy of character and devotedness to his duties, and during his stay of some nine years in this place had gathered around him a large flock, mainly by his own indefatigable industry and energy, had succeeded in erecting a splendid church, at a cost of some 8 or $10,000, and, that having been destroyed by fire, had raised a heavy part of the funds for, and laid the foundation of a new church on a still larger scale. As a priest, we believe he was generally much beloved by his flock, over whom he exerted an unusually extended and a healthful influence. [The Ottawa Free Trader, (Ottawa, Ill.), September 11, 1852]

PRESTON, Charles, Obituary
Died at Ottawa on Sunday afternoon, the 13th inst., of congestion of the lungs, Mr. Chas. Preston, of the firm of Gridley & Preston, merchants of this place, aged 30 years. We have hardly ever been called upon to recount the death of a young man who was more universally beloved and had so few enemies in this community, as Mr. P. As a business man he was upright in all his dealings; as a companion, kind and generous; as a son, the very stay and prop of his parents in their declining days, upon whom his loss falls with a severity which only their firm reliance on Him, whose care is over all, can enable them to bear. His funeral on Monday was a fitting testimony to the high estimate in which the deceased was held. [The Ottawa Free Trader, (Ottawa, Ill.), July 19, 1851]
