PASTORS OF THE CHURCH

The necessity of completing this work prevents the inclusion of historical remarks. Some data concerning the organization of the church appears on pages 35, 52 and 53. The reader must obtain further historical facts, either from the Abstract of Minutes, etc., pages 92 to 106, or from other sources.

After the church was organized by Dr. Jonathan Edwards, on Aug. 29, 1791, it was several years before they secured a settled pastor. On Apr. 11, 1793, the Society voted to call Mr. Asael Norton; and on Aug. 12, 1793, they voted to call Mr. Isaac Porter. Neither of the calls was accepted. The next year, the energies of the Society were devoted principally to finishing the meeting house.

The list of the ministers who supplied the church is made up from the minutes, the only source of information at present at my disposal.

STEELE, Eliphalet, July 15, 1795 to Oct. 7, 1817. On Mar. 1, 1795, the Society voted to call Rev. Eliphalet Steele. Formal action was taken at a meeting on Mar. 26, when the vote stood 38 to 12 in favor of the call. He accepted the call by letter dated June 15, 1795; and he was installed on July 15. The church edifice was finished in the fall of 1795. Rev. Eliphalet Steele died on Oct. 7, 1817; see page 34.

WATERS, John, May 28, 1817 to June 29, 1820. He was called in Jan., 1817; installed, May 28, 1817, as colleague to Rev. Eliphalet Steele. The pastoral relation was dissolved on June 29, 1820.

WEEKS, William R., Sept. 5, 1820 to May 2, 1831. Engaged as Stated Supply; released by the Society, on July 12, 1831; see page 99.

TOMPKINS, William B., Feb. 3, 1832 to Apr. 1, 1835. Those dates embrace the period covered by his handwriting in the minutes. On Nov. 27, 1832, he was engaged as Stated Supply for the term of one year; his services were continued until Apr. 1, 1835.

WILLISTON, Seth, Stated Supply, 1835 to 1836.

ALLEN, Edward, Stated Supply, Nov. 1, 1837 to Apr. 1, 1842.

BLODORT, L. P., Stated Supply, May, 1842 to May 1, 1844.

CORDELL, James G., Sept. (?) 1844 to Nov. 1, 1848; called Mar. 13, 1845.

BRACE, S. W., Stated Supply, Nov. 26, 1848 to May 5, 1850.

CAMPBELL, Samuel Minor, June 2, 1850 to ----. On June 2, 1850 he commenced his labors as Stated Supply, at which time he was a licentiate of the Presbytery of Ithaca. Called, Oct. 3, 1850; call and delivered to him, Nov. 19; accepted, Dec. 12. Mr. Campbell was examined by the Oneida Association on Dec. 19, and ordained and installed, Dec. 20, 1850. His pastorate extended beyond the date covered by the records now at hand.
