[From the Wetumpka Central Alabamian] - Old Uncle Ned Adkins, a good old colored man, died in this place last week. He was a minister of the gospel and was much beloved by his church. [From the Huntsville Independent] - We have to chronicle another homicide in our county. ON the night of the 22d, somewhere near midnight, Ben Cartridge, colored, was struck in the head with a stone thrown by Thomas Blair, colored, and died from the injury. DEVANEY, George, Obituary

[From the Tuscumbia North Alabamian] - Some words passed between a young man named King and George Devaney late in the evening of December 24, concerning a sack of flour which King had hauled for Devaney, and which had been allowed to get wet. King returned to Mrs. Rick's after supper and called Devaney, who had gone to bed, to the door. The latter got up and went to the door in his night clothes and talked to King, who was sitting on his horse, for a moment, when King threw up his gun and fired. Devaney fell, saying, "he has killed me," and expired immediately. King fled southward, and at last accounts was being closely pursued by several of Devaney's nephews. The deceased was a man of kind feelings, quite popular, and without malice or ill will towards any one. [Russell Register, (Seale, Ala.), Jan 10, 1878]

[From the Huntsville Advocate] - It is painful to us to announce the death of a child of Alderman Frank Dowd, which occurred a few days ago, caused by falling backwards into a large dishpan of hot water that was setting on the floor. [From the Selma Times] - We regret very much to chronicle the suicide, at Marion Junction, at 8 o'clock Tuesday night, of Mr. B. J. Fort, Jr., a young man of about 19 years of age. He shot himself through the head with a pistol and died in about an hour. He has been sick, and it is believed that he was laboring under mental derangement when he committed the rash act. He was a promising young man and was highly respected by the people among whom he lived, and sincere sympathy is felt and expressed for the family. No cause is known for the unfortunate act. GRUBBS, Friendly, Obituary

[From the Clayton Courier] - Died in Clayton, on Sunday evening last, Mr. Friendly Grubbs, a solider in the Indian and Mexican wars. He was born October 16th, 1817, and when he died was 61 years old.

He served in the Indian war and was engaged in the Battle at Hobdy's bridge, in 1836. He went to Texas from this county in the fall of 1837, and in 1841, enlisted in Capt. Eastman's company, of Col. Fisher's regiment of infantry, in Mier's expedition, and fought gallantly until he was captured, when he was taken to the castle of Perot and confined therein with a number of others. He and the others who were in prison escaped, and a short time after were recaptured. They were made to draw beans from a vessel in which beans equal to the number of prisoners who escaped and were recaptured were put to see which of the prisoners should be shot. For every sixteenth man there was a black bean put into the vessel, and those that drew the black beans were executed. He was fortunate enough to draw a white bean and saved his life, but the horrid treatment he received afterwards while a prisoner was almost worse than death. He, with the others that drew the white beans, were carried to the city of Mexico, where they were made to work between shafts to one-horse carts, with shackles, on, the greater portion of the time they were captives. He was in prison about two years and he with the others were discharged in the fall of 1844, at Perote, through the intercession of United states Minister Shannon. In the Spring of 1846, he returned to Barbour county. In 1847, he was married to a sister of Gen. Seth Mabry and Col. J. W. Mabry, who survives him. In 1848, he lost the use of his lower limbs and has been unable to get about except in a conveyance of some kind, and at times suffering the most excruciating pains;' the cause of which he attributed to his dreadful treatment while in the hands of the Mexicans.

He was buried in the Masonic cemetery on Monday evening; and a large number of citizens attended the burial. [Russell Register, (Seale, Ala.), Dec 5, 1878]

GRUBBS, Oscar D., Obituary

Deaths: Mr. Oscar D. Grubbs, who resided in Boxes Cove, near Larkinsville, Jackson county, died on Saturday night last, from the effect of a wound received in battle for the Confederacy. He was a good and intelligent citizen and was in the prime of life, and it is with sincere sorrow we chronicle his early demise. He leaves a wife and children. HARTSOOK, Mr., Obituary

[From the Troy Messenger] - A Mr. Hartsook, who lives near Ozark, Dale county, happened to the terrible misfortune of having his house burned and one of his children perish in the flames, on Thursday night of last week. About midnight, Mr. Hartsook and his wife awoke and discovered the whole roof on fire and just ready to fall in. He jumped out of bed, and seized a mattress, upon which were the children, including a pair of twins, were sleeping, and ran out with it. One of the twins, however, rolled off, and before he could return the roof fell in, cutting off al possible chances of rescue. All the family were more or less burned while making their escape, and the father rather severely in attempting to save his child. The remains of the little twin boy were found next morning in the ruins, burned to a crisp. [Russell Register, (Seale, Ala.), Dec 5, 1878]

JACKSON, Mrs. Julia A. E., Obituary

[From the Talladega Reporter] - Died, in Eastaboga, Talladega county, Ala, on the morning of Nov. 15th, 1877, after a lingering sickness of several months, Mrs. Julia A. E. Jackson. Mrs. J. was the oldest daughter of Mr. James Montgomery, and was born in Jackson county, Georgia, January 28th, 1820. In 1838 her father moved to this state and settled near this, her last home on earth, when not long after his daughter professed religion and joined the Presbyterian church, of which she has been a constant member and ornament till the day of her death. KAY, Major Reuben L., Obituary

[From the Selma Times] - By a sad accident, our community has been called on to mourn the loss of another old citizen - Major Reuben L. Kay - who made many friends here while he was in business as the head of the firm of Kay, Force & Lapsley. For the past three or four years Major Kay has spent most of his time at his summer residence, near Peeples' Station. On Wednesday last, while driving a team of young mules, just as he arrived at home, the team took fright at the opening of the gate, and dashing around, threw him to the ground, inflicting injuries from which he died, after eleven hours unconscious.

His remains were brought to the city yesterday and buried with Masonic honors in the West Selma Cemetery. The funeral service at the First Presbyterian Church was conducted by Rev. Dr. Cleveland, of the Baptist Church whose appropriate and impressive remarks will long be remembered by the congregation.

Major Kay was born in Kentucky and spent the prime of his life there and at Memphis, Tennessee, where, for many years, he was a man of much prominence as a merchant and manufacturer. He acquired there a considerable fortune, but he reverses of late years swept it all away but left with him that kindly Christian heart and sympathetic ear which he never turned away from the needy or suffering. It was this kindliness which attracted to him so many friends and brought so many to his grave to say with sad hearts, "Peace to his ashes." [Russell Register, (Seale, Ala.), Dec 5, 1878]

[From the Marion Commonwealth] - In rapid succession, three sisters, Miss Mary, the wife of R. C. Keeble, of Selma, Miss Alice and Miss Joe, all gifted with the highest intellectual powers, and possessing rare Christian virtues, have been blasted by the breath of consumption, and in their untimely death it seems that the hand of the destroyer has been laid upon the fairest flowers of all the field. [From the Birmingham Iron Age] - Little Tommy Kelly, aged about twelve years, son of Mr. J. D. Kelly, accidentally shot himself with a pistol at the depot in this city on Friday night last, from the effects of which he died Saturday evening. He was buried on Sunday evening at Elyton. [From the Opelika Observer] - Christmas day in Auburn, Jalus Smith, colored, struck John Kennedy, his half brother, over the head with a baseball bat, fracturing the skull. LAMPLY, Lee, Obituary

[From the Union Springs Herald] - Near Perote Saturday afternoon, Lee Lamply, a negro man, started out hunting with a loaded gun. When leaving the house he turned to lock his door, and in putting down his gun the manner struck against one of the steps, it is supposed, discharging the load, which entered the left breast, killing him instantly. [From the Columbus, Ga Times - From a private letter we are informed of the death of Mrs. A. C. Mitchell, Jr, on Sunday morning last. This most estimable lady was the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Thomas H. Dawson, and is well known in this city. From the same source, we learn that the frightful disease (diphtheria) from which she died, has already spread throughout the village, and quite a number of persons are stricken down. Sad Death
We regret to hear of the death of Mrs. Susie Mitchell, the wife of A. C. Mitchell Jr, of Glennville. She died last Sunday morning of diphtheria. MOORE, Wm., Obituary

Deaths: On the 27th ult., Mr. Wm. Moore died near Tuscaloosa, age thirty-two years. Mr. Moore left Tuscaloosa with Capt. Sam Palmer company, at the outbreak of the war, and received a lung wound at the battle of Murfreesboro, early in January, 1863, which was the ultimate cause of his death. He died of hemorrhage from the wounded lung. Thus it is that years after the close of the war, its victims are still found. [From the Wetumpka Central Alabamian] - A negro woman by the name of Cynthia Morgan died very suddenly in this place, one night last week. It seems that she went to bed as usual, and appeared to be well and cheerful up to a late hour, but the next morning to the horror of her husband, she was lying by his side dead. PLOWMAN, Hon. George P., Obituary

[From the Talladega Watchtower] Hon. George P. Plowman died in this city on Tuesday morning, the 26th instant. Judge Plowman had been in feeble health for some time, and his death was not unexpected. He had been confined to his house for months and gradually declined until yesterday morning, when he expired. Judge Plowman was about sixty-nine years of age, and had resided in Talladega for nearly forty-five years, being one of the oldest settlers in the town or county. He had raised a family of four sons and one daughter; was a kind, indulgent father and devoted husband. Judge Plowman was a man of positive character, and neither his friends nor his enemies ever had any difficulty in ascertaining his position. He was always true to his friends. Some months ago he expressed a change of heart, and manifested a disposition of forgiveness toward those with whom he had been at variance, and a desire to be at peace with all men. This spirit of kind and friendly feeling he maintained to the hour of his death. [Russell Register, (Seale, Ala.), Dec 5, 1878]

A Good Man Fallen
Died at his residence in Glennville, Russell county, Ala., Dr. John M. Raiford, aged about seventy-sci years. He was a consistent member of the M. E. Church, South. SAUNDERS, Rev. W. W., Obituary

[From the Opelika Leader] - Monday last Mr. W. P. Pinckard received a telegram announcing the death in Lynchburg, Va., of Rev. W. W. Saunders. Mr. Saunders was truly a noble, good man, an earnest worker in the cause of Christianity. He was a young man too, just entering into a life of usefulness. A short while ago he was the pastor of the Baptist Church in Union Springs, where he married a most estimable lady. Sometime ago he was called to Tuscaloosa to take charge of the Baptist Church there. Soon after he contracted a disease and was advised to go North for its treatment. He was well and favorably known in this community. Mr. Pinckard left Monday night for Atlanta to meet the remains. The interment will be in the family burial ground near Dadeville. [From the Florence Gazette] - Mr. Marshall Scott was drowned near Waterloo, recently. For several days he had been suffering from fainting spells, and it is supposed that after having tied his boat he went into it again after something and fainted, falling into the water. [From the Marion Commonwealth] - Died, on Oct. 27th, Mrs. Eliza F. Seawell, wife of Dr. L. M. Seawell. It is with unspeakable sadness that we today announce the death of the noble woman whose name appears above. She died of consumption at the home of her mother, at 11 o'clock a.m., Wednesday the 27th inst. The sad news has cast a gloom over our entire city, for none knew this noble woman without feeling themselves irresistibly attached to her by the strongest cords of friendship and veneration. UPTON, Cordia, Obituary

[From the Columbus Enquirer] - Yesterday morning Miss Cordia Upton, aged 33 years, was found dead in her bed. Her home was in Browneville, Ala, opposite this city. She was an employee of the Eagle and Phenix factory, and was on duty Monday, the day previous to her demise, but was complaining, we learned, of being somewhat sick. She died of taking an overdose of morphine, but it is a matter of uncertainty, as far as we can gather from various statements, whether or not she intentionally took too much of the dangerous drug. We were informed by two gentlemen that she sent for a dose of morphine Monday night, previous to her death, and that the bearer of the medicine instead of getting the proper quantity innocently purchased a larger amount - ten cents worth, we understand - and that the unfortunate woman, believing it to be the correct dose, took it. No one was present, however, when the deadly powder was taken. [Russell Register, (Seale, Ala.), Jan 10, 1878]

VAUGHAN, Hartwell, Obituary

[From the Cherokee Advertiser] - Hartwell Vaughan died near this place on the 17th of October, aged 90 years, 6 months and 23 days. The deceased was born in Greenville county, Virginia, March 4, 1788, and at the age of 10 years he moved to Union District, S. C. was married to Nancy Walls, October 3, 1811, and in 1835 he moved to this county, where he has since lived until the day of his death. He was a member of the Baptist church; was baptized 17th of September 1818, and lived a consistent Christian life for 60 years, and died with the sweet anticipation of a glorious immortality beyond the grave. He was the father of seven children, and lived to see 48 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren. His posterity numbered at the day of his death 182, although he had not seen them all. [Russell Register, (Seale, Ala.), Dec 5, 1878]
