MOSHER, Stephen Obituary, Dec. 10, 1875
Last Saturday evening, Stephen Mosher, of Leon, lost his life by drowning, in the village of Gowanda. The circumstances of his death, as related to us are as follows: Mosher had been drinking and was considerably intoxicated. He started to cross the Cattaraugus creek on the Main street bridge, but when part way over he staggered against the railing and fell over it into the creek. He was heard to cry for help after striking the water, but help could not reach him in time to save him. Hisbody was not found until Monday afternoon. Another murder by King Alcohol. Why will people use an article which brings so much sorrow and misery into the world? Cattaraugus Rep. [Jamestown Journal (Jamestown, NY) Friday, December 10, 1875; p.6.]
