The first Superintending School Comittee was appointed 1809, and consisted of the Rev. Joseph Haven, John P. Hale, Dr. Samuel Pray, Jacob McDuffee, James Tebbets, and Moses Roberts, Jr. In 1810-11 the office was held by the Rev. Joseph Haven, Dr. Samuel Pray, and Jeremiah H. Woodman, Esq. No more were appointed till required by law in 1828.

So far as can now be ascertained the following is the list of persons who have served the town as Superintending School Committee: *--
