HEWATT, William Alexander, Obituary
Tender Age Saves Boy From A Trial
Because of his tender age, seven-year-old Harold Whiteside will not be called to account before the courts for slaying ten-year-old William Alexander Hewatt, who was shot with a shotgun and instantly killed late Saturday afternoon by the little Whiteside boy in the back yard of the Whiteside home in Hall-st., near Highland-ave.
The police have made a thorough investigation of the tragedy and announce that no action will be taken against the childish slayer. Not only is the boy under the legal age of accountability, but the opinion prevails among the interested parties that little Harold really didn't intend to shoot his playmate.
The funeral of the Hewatt boy took place Sunday afternoon, the services being conducted at 3 o'clock in the Rehoba church. Interment was in the church yard.
The little Whiteside child is almost heartbroken over the tragedy, and, sobbing piteously, moans that he didn't mean to kill his playmate.
The killing followed a childish quarrel between the two little fellows, Harold Whiteside says the Hewatt boy came into his yard after the quarrel, while he was playing with two boys, Horace and Rufus Childress, and picked up some rock as tho to strike him. He says he obtained the gun, but didn't intend to shoot. Just as the Hewatt boy suddenly faced about with the rocks I his hands, however, he says the gun fired. He probably had his finger on the trigger, he states, and accidentally pressed it.
The entire load of shot struck the Hewatt boy and tore off almost the whole side of his head.
Mrs. Hewatt had just gone out on her back porch to call her boy home at the time and was a horrified witness to the killing. She was almost prostrated by the sight. The fathers of both boys are dairymen and are highly respected. [The Atlanta Georgian and News, (Atlanta, Ga.), September 5, 1910]
