A town settled in 1635 and covering an extensive territory which has since been divided into several townships. The Congregational church, formed in 1639, became the mother of several growing congregations within the limits of the original township. Two of these are now in the townships of Westbrook and Chester. The Second Church of Saybrook, formed in 1726, is now in Westbrook, a town incorporated in 1840. The Third Church, formed in 1742, is now in Chester, a town incorporated in 1836. The records of this old church have in the main been lost. The following alone remain of the marriages on Chester church records.
