DUNCAN, Rev. George M. G., Obituary
We regret to chronicle the untimely death of Rev. G. M. G. Duncan, which occurred on the 7th inst, after a brief but painful illness. Mr. Duncan served as pastor of this circuit for three years next preceding this year and was universally appreciated by the members of his flock as well as by all who knew him. His labor was well rewarded during his pastorate here. He leaves many friends on this circuit to mourn his sad demise. Nothing could have been more unexpected than the death of Bro. DUNCAN. He was the picture of health, in the prime of manhood, and bid fair to a long life of usefulness. Truly: "Death rides on every passing breeze, And lurks in every flower." His family has lost a kind husband and father, his intimate associates a warm friend, the state a good citizen, the church a faithful laborer, and Christianity a noble exemplar. May we all solve that we may merit that highest of all encomiums that may safely be pronounced over his bier, "He walked up-right, in the sight of the Lord." We tender our sincere sympathies to his bereaved family, whose hearts are sorely bruised over this severe affliction. May they look away from the cold consolation of a sordid world, and catch the sweet, sweet echoes of "I love thee. I love thee, Pass under the rod." - [Marion Herald, (Hamilton, AL), September 13, 1888]

Mrs. Duncan was raised in Marion County at Pikeville and has many friends there who welcome her to our town, and who sympathize deeply with her in the irreparable loss of her husband. May the God who has promised to extend his protecting care over all His children, ever watch her and her fatherless little ones, and give her grace and strength to bear up under the sad bereavement which has so suddenly fallen upon her, and to raise her children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, and when time shall cease to be may there be a happy reunion of that family in heaven without the loss of a single one. - [Marion Herald, (Hamilton, AL), Sept. 27, 1888]

PONDER, Miss Mary, Obituary
A Young Lady's Spotless Soul Takes Its Flight - Miss Mary Ponder died yesterday morning. She has been sick several days, and said from the beginning that her soul would soon take a flight to immortal fields of brightness. Several days ago, Miss Mary called the sad family to her bedside and told them all that she was going to die, that she was willing to leave this world, although she loved her people. She made several requests as to the course which different members of the family should take and told them that on Wednesday night she would bid a farewell to earthly things. She did not die Wednesday night, but Thursday she was much better. The family took new hope, but the young lady yet said that her life on this earth would be ended Sunday, today. Friday she was taken more seriously ill and constantly grew until yesterday morning, when she passed peacefully away at her father's home, 2512 Second Avenue. The deceased had many friends in this city and all over Alabama, who will shed tears over her untimely death - [Herald] The subject of the above was a young lady just budding into womanhood. She was a native of Lawrence County and a niece of D. C. and Jourd White, of the Moulton Advertiser. She follows a mother that preceded her only a few months to the "borun from whence no traveler ever returns. She was known to the writer almost from her infancy, and we can truthfully say that she was one of nature's noblest women. Her generous impulses, her amiable disposition, her purity of character, and her modest, unassuming manner made her a favorite wherever she was known. All who knew her will revere her memory and mourn her untimely death. To the grief-stricken parent and family we extend our heart-felt sympathy. - [Marion Herald, (Hamilton, AL), October 25, 1888]
