CLANTON, Mrs. Jerome, Obituary

A Sad Death - [Columbus Dispatch] - The death of Mrs. CLANTON, better known in our city as Mrs. M. M. BALDWYN, was a sad and unexpected even. Exactly one month ago yesterday she was married at the Presbyterian church in this city to the HON. JEROME CLANTON, a distinguished lawyer and Senator of Eutaw, Ala, and left on her bridal trip to Alabama and Florida. A telegram came a few days since, stating that she had died at Osceola. Her remains arrived in our city on yesterday, and were interred in the Odd Fellow Cemetery. "In the midst of life we are in death" was never more exemplified than in the death of this most estimable and Christian lady. She left here in robust health, but death comes to all persons at all times. At his cruel touch the cheek pales, the heaving boom grows still, the beating heart ceases to pulsate, the eloquent tongue is hushed in silence, and the eye grows dim and closes forever to all earthly love and friends. Mrs. Clanton was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. We tender our sympathy to the afflicted husband and family. [Vernon Pioneer, (Vernon, Ala.), March 25, 1887]

COBB, Judge Alexander, Obituary

Probate Judge, ALEXANDER COBB, was born March 5th, 1819. He departed this life on the evening of the 21st of November 1887. His exact age being 68 years, 8 months and 17 days. After two weeks of painful suffering, which this noble, true and good man bore with patience and fortitude, his life went out with the setting of the sun. Just one week before his death he embraced the religion of Jesus Christ, and was admitted into the Church by Rev. G. L. HEWITT and from that day till his death his utterances were praised to God of the brightest kind. One more precious soul has entered in through the beautiful gates to join the minstrel of Heaven and receive the coronation of the pure, the true, and the good into the beautiful home above our departed friend entered, and is now singing the song of redemption. While he is now hidden from our view by the tomb's dark veil, there is a comfort to the grieving and bereaved hearts that there is one more added to the angels number and soon the veil will be rent, and the one who has only gone before will be waiting and watching at the pearly gate to greet their happy entrance there.

Next Sunday at 11 a.m. at the M. E. Church South, the Memorial services of Judge ALEXANDER COBB will be conducted in the following manner: Opening exercises by Rev. G. L. HEWITT, Testimonial remarks by Dr. W. L. MORTON, R. E. BRADLEY, J. D. MCCLUSKEY, S. J. SHIELDS, T. B. NESMITH, and Hon R. L. BRADLEY. The friends of the deceased are respectfully invited to attend. By the Pastor.

Tribute to the Memory of Judge ALEXANDER COBB - The following was read at the Memorial Services of Judge Cobb, By Dr. L. W. MORTON, in the Methodist Church last Sabbath morning: - This sad occasion is in memory of our lamented and distinguished fellow citizen Hon. ALEXANDER COBB, Judge of our Probate and County Court, whose death occurred on the ---- inst. I have known the Judge for many years, and intimately associated with him during the last 10 or 12 years as friend and physician; so much so that he made of me a confidant in much of his public and private life enabling me to see --- along the elements of the --- toned and honorable gentleman. He was always clever and obliging more inclined to look to the comforts and happiness of others than that of his own. His great heart in the --- of hospitality to his friend and charity to the poor knew no bounds. It seems that when --- calls were so frequent for ---- the heart would become cold and callous, it was not so with him, as I never knew him to send one away empty. Those whose houses have been burned by accident or the incendiary torch, or swept away by the fierce cyclone, can testify to the ---- of his great liberality toward them. Not only the in----igent will miss him, but we of this town, and surrounding country will miss him. Not alone in his society, good advice and council will we miss him, he has ever been a strong support and liberal in all of our public works and every thing looking to the comfort and pleasure of our people. Officially a purer and better man in my humble opinion never held the office of Judge of Probate. Honesty and integrity were the chief factors in his official career.
