BOGGAN, Pickett, Obituary

Mr. Pickett Boggan, a respected citizen of more than forty years residence in this county, met a most singular death at his home near Pine Apple, a short time since. He was sitting in the piazza of his house, in a rocking chair, and near the railing or banister, his feet resting at the edge of the flooring. In this position his feet slipped off the floor towards the ground, his body being allowed to follow on account of the moving forward of the chair on the rockers; his chin caught on the upper railing, and the back of the chair came up against the back of his head and so remained, so that he was suspended in this singular manner. Being quite old and infirm, he was unable to extricate himself, and the weight of his body resting on his chin prevented his opening his mouth to call for help, and he thus died form strangulation before any one knew of the terrible accident. Doubtless his neck was pressed tightly against the railing [Greenville Advocate] [Birmingham Iron Age, (Birmingham, Ala.), November 11, 1875]

BOYLE, Col. B., Obituary

The news of the sudden death of Col. B. Boyle, at Opelika, yesterday, created a profound feeling of sadness in this city. He left here yesterday morning for Opelika. Arriving there, he was attempting to get off the cars, when he fell between them. The cars being in motion the wheels ran over him and crushed both legs to pieces, besides inflicting other terrible wounds. He lived but a short while afterwards. Col. Boyle has been connected with railroads all his life, and is well known throughout the South as a contractor and builder. He and his associate, Mr. Kelly built many miles of the Montgomery and Eufaula railroad. They had large contracts on the South and North Road, and are at present interested in the Selma and Gulf and Opelika and Guntersville Railroads. Col. Boyle was Superintendent of the latter road. His death is a severe loss, not only to his family and friends, but to the entire State. He was a public spirited, enterprising citizen and as noble and high-minded and generous a man as Alabama could boast. Most sincerely do we deplore his loss. His remains will reach the city this morning from Opelika. [Advertiser, 20th ult.] [Birmingham Iron Age, (Birmingham, Ala.), July 1, 1875]

HAMILTON, Jack, Obituary

Death of Jack Hamilton
We find the following paragraph in the correspondence of the Cincinnati Enquirer, dated Austin, Texas, April 7th. The distinguished man referred to in the extract was a son of Col Hamilton who fought under Gen. Jackson at New Orleans and died at Cameron’s store in this County many years ago. Jack was born at Hamilton’s Springs in St. Clair county but was raised in Cahaba valley in this county till early manhood, when he studies law and was licensed to practice in Talladega or Chambers county whence he emigrated to Texas. His sister Julia married the Rev. Wm. A. Smith at the residence of Col Dupuy near Elyton about the year 1835 and also emigrated to Texas. Another sister married Hugh Copeland, Esq. and her descendants are still residing at or near Springville:

"Today the people of this town and vicinity are gathered at the Capitol, at the head of (this) Congress avenue to pay the last sad tributes of respect to all that remains of the late Governor Jack Hamilton, whose name and fame are part and parcel of the history of Texas. A brilliant orator, the rival of Tom Corwin on the stump, he came here in the dark days of the "Lone Star" Republic, took an active part against Mexico in effecting the National Independence, and has since resided here, one of the most prominent characters. During the war, we believe he was a Union man, and after the struggle was over was elected Governor, in which position he was succeeded by Davis. With a head only equaled by his heart, he never endeavored to save a fortune though a dozen had slipped through his fingers. Full of sympathy for all mankind, he goes to the grave mourned by all, and this day the Ex-Confederate and the Union soldier will each stand y the bier of the fallen one, each regretting that a heart so noble and true is forever hushed in death. HAWKINS, Williamson, Obituary

This aged citizen died at the residence of his son, Dr. N. Hawkins, near Elyton, on Thursday, the 5th inst. He was 85 years of age and was one year younger than his wife; who survives him. In 1815 he came to Jones Valley and settled near Wood’s Station. The next year he removed to Village Creek, where he lived till since the war. On account of age and infirmity for the past few years, he made his home with his son.

Mr. Hawkins was a man of strong constitution and of great vigor both of body and mind. In early life he was poor and ignorant of letters, but by great industry and economy he accumulated the largest property owned by any citizen of Jefferson county. His business sagacity was almost infallible and he always bought the best property and usually at the lowest prices. For plain common sense, decision of purpose and honesty in his dealings, no man excelled him and few were his equals. He leaves a number of descendents, most of whom reside in this county. SMITH, Allie, Obituary

Died, suddenly of croup, on the morning of the 24th ult., Little ALLIE, daughter of L. A. H. SMITH – a sweet bright-eyed babe of only three short months and four days. She was sick only a half hour when the icy hand of death was upon her. She was lovely in life, and lovely still in death. Now that our little darling is gone, she will be “to mem’ry dear.” And dear to God. With her little form so beautiful and white, and her dear little hands clasping a bunch of lilies pure and white, we laid her down to rest ‘neath the shade of the live oak.

All that’s bright must fade
The brightest is the fleetest
All that’s sweet was made
But to be lost when sweetest.
